Sandal season is on the horizon and that means you only have a few weeks to get those toes in bare it all beach shape. The best way to start is to get in the habit of giving your feet the attention they deserver. A at home pedicure is a terrific way to help your feet greet the sun. Here’s how you can pamper your toes at home and have them ready for sandals in no time.

• Step 1: Cut, File, and Clean

  Before cutting or filing your nails make sure to remove all old nail polish. Using a quality toe nail clipper, clip your nails straight across so that they even with the tip of your toe but not extending over it. Avoid clipping the edges of your nails as is can result in painful ingrown toenails later on. After clipping your nails use an Emory board to file them. Do so in a single direction, rounding them at the corners.

  Hint: Emory boards and nail files have two sides. One side is courser and is for shaping your nails while the other is finer and works to smooth nails.

• Step 2: Warm Foot Soak

  Fill a large basin or bowl with warm water making sure to account for the water your feet will displace. Add some bath salts, Epsom salt, or essential oils to your water. You can also add about a third or a quarter cup of milk to the warm water to help loosen dry, dead skin. Grab a magazine or the remote and soak your feet for about 10 to 15 minutes depending on how dry, calloused, or cracked they are.

• Step 3: Trim Cuticles

  To trim your cuticles first apply a cuticle remover or softener to each toe nail concentrating on the base. Leave on for about a minute and the push the cuticle away from the nail using a gentle circular motion. Only remove skin that is in actually on top of the nail, removing anything else will be painful.

• Step 4: Exfoliate

  Get rid of dead skin and soften healthy skin by exfoliating. Use a scrub made specifically for feet or you can use a pumice stone to achieve the same effect. Pay particular the areas of your foot that experience the most wear. That would be the balls of your feet, your heel, and around your toes, particularly the pinkie and the big toe.

• Step 5: Moisturize

  The work you just did could be basically a waste of time if you don’t moisturize. Look for a moisturizing cream made specifically to meet the needs of your feet. Don’t stop at your toes, work the moisturizers up your legs.

• Step 6: Prime for Polish

  After applying lotion and oils to your feet and toes you need to remove some of the oil from your nails in order for the polish to adhere. To do this use a cotton swab to wipe the nail and cuticle area with acetone nail polish remover. Follow this with a thin clear base coat.

• Step 7: Apply Polish

  After allowing the base coat to dry add a coat of nail polish in the color you have chosen. Generally you will want to use three even strokes to create a smooth and even appearance.

• Step 8: Apply Top Coat

  After waiting a few minutes for your color coat to dry apply a top coat to prevent chipping and extend wear time. Allow your nails at least thirty minutes to draw before subjecting them to any activity that will smudge, dent, or otherwise damage your sandal ready toes.

• Step 9: After Care

  It’s tempting to start showing your new feet right after you’re pedicure is finished but until it’s sandal time, keep them protect with quality cotton socks to help them maintain moisture and stay silky smooth.

Teva Women’s Westwater Mary Jane shoes are perfect for that wet getaway. I’ve always had a problem finding the perfect shoes for the beach. Usually, I use flip flops but I usually find it a burden when they suddenly come off while walking. And it’s definitely a no-no when swimming! Sandals could work. I tried them but I soon realized that it had to be a special kind or else walking on water would destroy the fabric, and sometimes irritate the skin. I decided that when I could, I’d try to find those perfect beach sandals.

That’s when I stumbled upon this special type of Teva Mary Janes. I decided to quit manually searching for it through various stores and chose to find the perfect pair through the internet. After being persuaded by many good reviews about it, I ordered a pair online. I didn’t regret this decision of mine for when I received it, I loved it at once! It looked pretty stylish. I adored it even more when I wore it for the first time. I then found myself wearing it for the rest of the day without experiencing any hassles from it. It was soft to my feet and didn’t feel yucky at all.

Later on, I was surprised to find out the real price. Buying it online was a real bargain for me and the shoes served me well. I haven’t actually used in the beach but I got to try them on at a pool party one of my friends threw. It felt comfortable all through out the day and even with the water, my feet did not have any unwanted odor afterwards. I’m actually thinking of recommending it to my girl friends for our upcoming beach trip. I really got a great deal with these Teva Women’s Westwater Mary Jane shoes.

Why do most teenagers own more flip flop sandals than any other shoes? Much has been published about the dangers of daily flip flop wearing, but this generation continues to don them on a daily basis.

Biomechanical engineers in the UK have touted (and backed up their claim with real science) the “Fit Flop” as a way to tone your butt, legs, calves and thighs while walking. Refreshingly, a side effect of wearing “Fit Flops” appears to be a decrease in stress on your feet, legs and back decreasing wear and tear as well as some common achy pains.

Why is this? The “Fit Flop” is engineered much like a “barefoot technology” shoe. It makes the muscles that stabilize the foot work harder and over a period of time can actually strengthen your feet. The common flip-flop actually accentuates pronation, the rolling in of your feet which causes fatigue and biomechanical stress in your feet and lower legs. This can lead to overuse injuries like plantar fasciitis and posterior tibial tendonitis which are commonly known as “arch fatigue” or “fallen arches”. Flip-flop sandals also increase the stress on the great toe joint and can accelerate Hallux abducto valgus also known as “bunion” formation. Different midsole densitities actually accelerate the propulsion phase of gait, decreasing the stress on the great toe joint and decreasing injuries. Those people suffering from bunions may make them their daily shoe gear!

The makers of “Fit Flops” have some good science behind their claim to increase muscle activation 10-12% and it was verified by an independent lab outside their company. Consumers should be cautioned to wear the “Fit Flops” gradually because of the delayed muscle soreness that occurs just like the beginning of a work out routine.

Is the “Fit Flop” the answer to your workout woes? Can your foot problems be a thing of the past? Not even close, no shoe can do that! They can help you burn a few more calories during your daily routine, but cardiac fitness can never be achieved in this manner. A new sandal, no matter how effecive, cannot replace your daily fitness routine. Do no skip your workout. Maybe a curvier calf muscle or thinner thigh, but just walking in a sandal cannot achieve real fitness.

Can anyone wear a “Fit Flop?” Caution should be taken in picking any shoe. Foot type is important to evaluate. The “Fit Flop” is not for you if you have a significantly flexible flat foot due to the destabilizing technology built in to the sandal which can actually accentuate stress injuries in this unstable foot type. If you require in-shoe foot orthotics, the “Fit Flop” is probably not for you.

Bottom line: “Fit Flops” are a good alternative to the common flip-flop sandal but should be worn gradually. Pay attention to any fatigue in your feet! If you have any foot pain or injury, visit your podiatrist and ask their advice on your ability to wear “Fit Flops.”

Before I get into this article, I have to let all my faithful readers know that I have never owned a pair of MBT shoes or any other type of special footwear before. My interest in these particular shoes stems from the fact that I work on my computer all day, and have started to get some back pains and pains in my joints. However, since it is required to have the product before I can really comment on them, I have decided to join the new fitness revolution and buy a pair of these new MBT sneakers.

MBT stands for Masai Barefoot Technology and the shoes are designed to copy walking on a beach in the sand. It’s a multiple layered, curved sole that obtains this by creating a natural, but uneven walking surface. This Masai technology is meant to make the core strengthening muscles more active, producing better posture, better back strength and increasing shock absorption for all of the joints. It also makes wearing these walking shoes quite a unique experience to say the least, and quite a workout.

I purchased a pair of the MBT Shoes called the sport white. When I received them, I was a bit thrown back on how weird they looked. They looked clunky and huge. I put them on and was instantly feeling weird. They rock back and forth, due to the curved sole. But after a few minutes of wearing these MBT’s, I became use to the weird motion and began to walk around. They actually felt really good. Walking felt better from some reason. As you walk, the shoe actually propels you in a correct fashion. When standing still, you feel more upright and my back felt more straight.

I have been wearing them now for the last 6 months and I can honestly say that I am extremely pleased with the quality of this walking shoe. The positive changes I have seen in my back pain since I began wearing the MBT shoe is remarkable. I feel better and healthier and think this walking shoe has really helped my posture. I can look back and say that I am reaping some benefits from wearing these shoes and highly recommend them.
